Dr. David Phillips is a well known, highly effective psychologist serving individuals and couples in Atlanta and the surrounding areas. With over 25 years of experience and a deep concern for others, he is unique in the community of psychologists. Some professional therapists are great listeners but provide less than successful counseling. Others practice “half-listening” and apply a common protocol of counseling to all their clients. Dr. Phillips is extremely effective in his practice because he first assesses the complete individual – mental state, spiritual beliefs, relationships, all the things that make you who you are. He then sets a course of treatment over a certain period of time and works closely with you to achieve consistent progress along the way. Through this process, maximum results can be achieved.
Dr. Phillips received his Bachelors Degree from Indiana University. He received Honors in Psychology and wrote his thesis with John Gottman on Marital Communication. He then went on to Florida State University where he received his Masters in Clinical Psychology. His Masters thesis was on Crisis Counseling. After this, he proceeded to a Stanford University affiliated hospital and Palo Alto VAMC for an internship. Dr. Phillips received his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Florida State University, writing his thesis on Alcohol Abuse.

Some people are confused about the differences among therapists’ training background. While there are some doctoral-level social workers, marriage-and-family counselors, and professional counselors, most have a master’s degree. Psychiatrists and psychologists have pursued their education to the highest level. After graduating from medical school, psychiatrists generally attend a residency where they gain experience in their field. The practice of psychiatry consists mostly of medication management and not psychotherapy per se. After completing a bachelor’s degree in psychology, Psychologists attend graduate school at a department of psychology for four years. They finish a year of psychology internship and two years of supervised post-doctoral experience. Most clinical psychologists provide psychotherapy or behavioral treatment and do not prescribe medication. For any medication needs, the patient is referred to their physician or to a psychiatrist on a consultative basis.
